Daily Digest: Paup It Open

The format that keeps gaining ground during the Standard and Modern slow period is Pauper! With so many looking to get ahead in the latest popular format, what deck looks most fun to you?

We’re in a pretty strange lull on Magic Online right now. Standard is a “dead” format and Modern is facing an inevitable ban. As a result, it might be natural for some folks, like me, to turn toward some other formats for entertainment. I think Pauper is a great choice to do that, as it is fairly untapped on its potential despite having some “best” decks like Temur Tron, Mono-Blue, and Mono-Black.

This Temur Tokens looks incredibly interesting. What I love about it is that it’s pretty straightforward and basically interested in doing the same thing every game: flood the battlefield with bodies and eventually attack, cast a Keep Watch, and then cast a Rites of Initiation to kill your opponent.

There are a host of cantrips in the deck to insure that this sequence is as consistent as possible, including Abundant Growth, Manamorphose, and format all-star Prophetic Prism. The creatures included by Teslashock1 are all about generating card advantage, with the lone exception being Essence Warden, which is easily capable of keeping us alive when supported by cards like Scatter the Seeds and Sprout Swarm.

I fear that this deck might be a little vulnerable to countermagic, particularly from Mono-Blue, as a lot of the strength of Temur Tokens is in its pay-off cards, but there’s still something to be said for simply flooding the battlefield and going wide with your anemic squad.

The sideboard uses the “splashes” going on here incredibly well, as we now have access to both a variety of “Blast” effects alongside some of the popular Pauper land destruction. If you’ve never played Moment’s Peace before, it is an incredibly messed-up effect at what it does. I bet it’s particularly powerful against this deck too!

I really can’t recommend Pauper enough if you’re looking to play Magic Online right now. Despite Sealed Leagues being a great new change for Magic Online, you might still have an itch for a “relevant” Constructed format, and this Temur Tokens deck is an awesome option for getting into the fray.
