Countdown To Grand Prix Richmond: 7 Days Out — Guest Of Honor!

Cedric Phillips shares how you can meet Grand Prix Richmond’s Guest of Honor, longtime Magic illustrator John Avon, in today’s Countdown!

Welcome back to the Grand Prix Richmond countdown blog! Yesterday, I went over everything related to the side events at Grand Prix Richmond. From the schedule for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to the unique events like Foiled Again! and the Sunday Pro Tour Qualifier , everyone should now have a better idea of what side events are available from May 5-7.

When one comes to a Grand Prix, most of the time it’s to play in the main event and test your skills against some of the best players in the world. For others, it’s to play in as many side events as possible because you just love the value that the Infinite Challenge option represents. And with the addition of the Command Zone, even Commander players have their own area to do their thing.

But something that everyone has in common at Grand Prix? Their love of special guests! And at Grand Prix Richmond, there are going to be quite a few. And the headliner? The critically acclaimed John Avon!

The Who

As it so eloquently states on his website:

When he was around zero years old, John Avon realized that the only thing he was ever ‘really’ good at was Art. As a school kid he began painting many surrealistic images, including a house being filled with toothpaste and a submarine being attacked by a shrimp… a pattern was emerging!

Having mastered classical oil painting as a teenager, John furthered his education on graphic design degree in Britain’s most bohemian city, Brighton.

On graduating John embarked upon his by career painting book covers for some of the world’s most famous authors including Stephen King, Arthur C Clarke, Peter James, Harry Harrison and Terry Pratchett. After about 5 years he moved over to acrylics and airbrushing, so his art would arrive at the publishers actually dry! By chance in 1996 John met one of the art directors for Magic: the Gathering and that was the start of a long and beautiful relationship. John’s first painting for Magic was Purple Mountain.

John lives in Brighton with his wife Patricia and two teenage sons.

John Avon Art is a partnership between John Avon and his friend Guy Coulson. Guy is a lifetime science fiction fan and has a passion for fantasy artwork.
