The first pick of this draft was an interesting one. I think in a harder tournament than a draft on Magic Online I would take the Sulfurous Blast, but it had been a while since I’d been able to play with the Shapeshifter so I decided to go with that. I quickly got into Blue/Red because there wasn’t much else, even though all the card I was passing were Blue and Red. Things went about as expected until I got a third pick Stormbind in pack 3. That is something that shouldn’t happen. Stormbind is nearly unbeatable while in play, and is almost always worth sacrificing your manabase for. I can’t see myself ever passing it in a two-color deck, with Red or Green.
I won a close first round against a White/Red deck. He won the first game due to my awkward draw. I was always one mana away from being able to play two spells in a turn which would have swung the race my way. In the second game he got ahead early, but couldn’t compete with the card advantage when my Crookclaw Transmuter ate his Amrou Scout, and I Temporal Eddyed when he played Undying Rage. I won the third game because he didn’t play around a Draining Whelk that was quite obviously in my hand. First off, I played the Whelk in game 1, so he knew about its existence, and second I blocked his Flickering Spirit with my Riftwing Cloudskate which had just returned his Fury Sliver to hand, to keep him off Fury Sliver mana that turn. If he had just kept attacking with the Flickering Spirit, and keeping his mana up it would have been pretty difficult for me to win that game.
In round 2 I played against the excellent Red/Black deck two seats to my left, because the guy behind me apparently took Errant Ephemeron over Sulfurous Blast second. Sulfurous Blast and Bogardan Hellkite blew me out in the first game. In the second game he was without Swamps, and his only play was a Ghostflame Sliver off a Chromatic Star, which I Temporal Eddyed. He mulliganed had another poor draw in game 3, while I had a very quick start with Stormbind to finish him off.
My deck was pretty good, but I still felt lucky to split the finals of this draft.
