Another Blue/Green (splashing White) beatdown deck, another win. This time I was in Blue/Green from the beginning, and got rewarded with some ridiculous stuff like Tromp the Domains seventh in pack 3. In general I prefer Fathom Seer to Brine Elemental, but I felt that Briney was a better fit in this deck, allowing me to put away games where I had got ahead early and had a slight board advantage, I feel I’ve really figured out how to draft Blue/Green beatdown (it’s all about Strength in Numbers).
Game 1 I suspended Ephemeron turn 2, played Looter turn 3, Careful Consideration turn 4, and Penumbra Spiders on turns 5 and 6. His Black/Red deck simply couldn’t handle the Spiders so they held him off while the Ephemeron went the distance, with some help from Strength in Numbers when he tried to Skycutter it then block. Game 2 was close, until he played Sudden Spoiling, thinking he would wreck me, but I had Wipe Away for one blocker, and Strength in Numbers for the other.
Round 2 I played against a mediocre White/Black deck with Avatar of Woe. In the first game I was able to hold off four of his creatures with a single Penumbra Spider. The turn he decided to go for it and attack with his team I had played Brine Elemental, so I was able to take it and then win with two attacks back. Game 2 I double mulliganed, but was again able to hold him off with Penumbra Spider. Just as I was about to take over the game he drew Avatar of Woe, and there was very little I could do about that. In game 3 I had a pretty good draw, with four creatures in play on turn 6 when I cast Tromp the Domains and he was forced to double chump block. There was no recovering from that.
I again split the finals to get another draft in.
