Pick 1: If I had to rank these cards it would be Oblivion Ring first, Drowner
second, and Purity third. However, while Drowner is still effective in Blue/Black,
in Blue/White he’s insane. We’re passing two good White cards, but
there’s the chance we would be picking different stuff, as the Kithkin deck is so
much dfferent to the Merfolk deck. I’m not a big fan of Merfolk, but I like to
avoid aggro White if possible.
Pick 2: A very weak pack, Peppersmoke is the best card.
Pick 3: There are two Faeries, one Blue and another Black, but Briarhorn is better
and two people have already passed it.
Pick 4: Four picks, four colors. In this pack there’s only Tarfire, and then
everything else is much weaker. Bog-Strider Ash isn’t very appealing – it’s not a
card you want to go Green for, and it’s four mana. In picking Tarfire I’m
sure to waste some of these early picks, but having options open with good
cards is not a bad strategy.
Pick 5: Witches seem a natural pick so late, and I already have Briarhorn as an
Instant, plus Tarfire and Peppersmoke.
Pick 6: Again, I don’t want to go Green because of a four mana Bog-Strider Ash.
Fire-Belly Changeling is the only other card.
Pick 7: Lots of Green cards seem to indicate that Green is open, but looking at
it thus far, even if Green was open, all I saw was
a Briarhorn (which I took) and then some average cards.
I settled in Black/Red aggro.
P32: I was unsure about this pick… Mudbutton Torchrunner versus Glarewielder.
The Elemental would be really good in my deck, but Torchrunner was also
good. I took the easier card to cast, as that’s my tie-breaker when I don’t
know for sure.
Pick 38: I think I have enough two-mana 2/1s (and two-mana drops in general).
If they play Treefolk Harbinger against me on turn 1, I can’t
win. I was more scared of this Harbinger than anything else in there.
Round 1 I played against Blue/White Merfolk.
I think this is a good matchup. He had some good merfolk like Harpoon
Sniper and Drowner of Secrets, but I had some removal to kill key guys.
In both games I had Boggart Mob in play by turn 5 or 6. In the first
one I played a Caterwauling Boggart to follow, so I made many 1/1 Goblins. I
made an alpha strike with Inner-Flame Igniter, but his last two cards in
hand were both Neck Snap. He survived on one life, but his board was much better.
However, he was down to zero cards and I was still holding three spells. I
just played some more stuff to make another all-out attack for the last point.
In the second game he never had anything to stop a 5/5 from hitting, so it
was almost good enough by itself.
Round 2 I played against a good Blue/White deck.
He won the second game with his good cards… Cloudgoat Ranger, Sentinels of
Glen Elendra, Pestermite, Oblivion Ring, etc. In the first he drew 11 lands and
four cards, and in the third he mulliganed and stalled on three lands,
playing almost nothing. My draw in game 1 was good, so I could’ve battled
against a good draw of his own. It was not so good in game 3, but he only played one
Moonglove Extract and one creature.
I split the finals.
