I struggled with my third pick. The Grief Tyrant is the best card in the pack but it sends me in completely the opposite direction of where I want to go after the first two picks. The Medicine Runner is in the right direction but so very mediocre. I took the Flask because it gives me options. I think I should’ve simply taken the Medicine Runner and done my best to cut off White. With the next pick I have could’ve tried to stay White with the Glamer Spinners but the fourth pick Puncture Bolt seemed like the place to be although the pack did obviously start out quite strong. I wasn’t sure about Puncture Blast or Recumbent Bliss so I took the foil. I was kicking myself when an opponent played Oversoul of Dusk and I had Puncture Blast in hand but I managed to race the Oversoul dealing the final three on my last turn with Puncture Blast.
I tried to draft an aggressive deck but it just wan’t there. Gerald R Thompson told me that he likes to draft White control decks with Barrenton Medic and Woeleecher occasionally so I figured I’d give it a go since this seemed like the right start for it. It’s a deck that can survive the early game and then sets up an impregnable defense for the late game while attacking with a flyer or something.
In the first round I played against a quick Green White deck. He got me low with Nettle Sentinel and Monstrify before I was able to make my Voracious Hatcling big and start gaining all the life back making all of his early damage irrelevant. Game 2 I had Spectral Procession on turn 3 but he had Oversoul of Dusk on turn 4. I was able to race by enchanting my Barrenton Medic with Power of Fire playing some chump blockers and finishing him with Puncture Blast. On the last turn if he played Monstrify on anything but his Oversoul of Dusk I would have had to chump with the Medic and would have come up one damage short in the race.
Round 2 I played against a decent mono Red deck. I was ablout to gain complete control in game 1 at thirteen life when he played Ember Gale with Morsel Hoarder a Mimic Bloodmark Mentor and Rustrazor Butcher in play. When he attacked I chose to Scar the Bloodmark Mentor and go to four because I could have trouble dealing with a first striking Morsel Hoarder in the future. He had some rare card that deals 4 to me. Game 2 I played some Plains and Armored Ascension…Game 3 I got stuck on three lands and he killed my Silkbind Faerie then put Runes of the Deus on his Hatchet Bully and attacked a few times while I was stuck unable to play any spells.
Until Monday…
