I’m still uncertain how I got Boartusk Liege third pick in pack 1. I actually had to double check and make sure I didn’t accidentally join a 4322 but it was actually an 8-4. Pick 2 in pack 1 was close between Knacksaw Clique Briarberry Cohort and Intimidator but we all know how I love mono Red and I wanted to get max value out of my Javelin if possible. I’m not really sure which Blue card I’d take instead as I don’t have a ton of experience with the Clique.

The draft was pretty interesting as I was set on mono Red until getting Rise of the Hobgoblins which made me want Devoted Druid in the deck again. Pyre Charger isn’t that exciting anyway and Aerie Ouphes sealed the deal. The mana was really good either way so obviously the right move is to build for more power. I decided I’d board in Marshdrinker Giant as well if I thought it’d be good as it was a bit too clunky and unreliable for the maindeck.

Round 1 game 1 I mulliganned on the play into a hand with 3 Forest Hatchet Bully Flame Javelin Scuzzback Scrapper. I never drew another land and my opponent killed me with a Duergar Cave-Guard. I guess if I was mono Red I would’ve at least been able to Flame Javelin his guy but that would only buy me a turn or two against his smaller men. For game 2 I sided out the Green as Rustrazor Butcher and Scar were better against his X/1s. I crushed him game 2 after killing three guys with Ember Gale and then playing Liege. Game 3 my opener was four small guys and three land and I proceded to draw 7 straight lands off of the top which totally negated the fact that I had him to 9 life before he had any kind of board presence.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
