Nathan Steuer won Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven in Las Vegas, Nevada with Selesnya Landfall on Sunday.

Steuer added onto his legacy in competitive MTG, taking home a second Pro Tour trophy to join his World Championship title. After a flawless Day 1 record, Steuer had a bumpy Day 2 but still secured a 12-4 record to make the Top 8 as the No. 6 seed after a 5-1 performance in Secrets of Strixhaven Draft and a 7-3 record in Standard. Steuer’s results slowed down following his incredible run of three premier-level event Top 8s (with two wins) in 2022 and 2023, but he’s back with another marquee victory that queues him for another year of Pro Tours.

While Izzet decks were the talk of the tournament before play began, green decks had the last laugh. Rui Zhang on Izzet Lessons and Maxx Kominowski on Izzet Spellementals were the only players in the Top 8 on Izzet decks, while five players were on base-green archetypes. Zevin Faust, in his second Pro Tour Top 8, was the outlier on Azorius Tempo.

Steuer making history as a two-time Pro Tour champion ended a shot at history for Christoffer Larsen, a Team Cosmos Heavy Play teammate, as the Dane was looking to become the first player to ever win back-to-back individual Pro Tours. Larsen, also on Selesnya Landfall, met Steuer in the finals and pushed the match to a deciding Game 5, but he couldn’t fend off Steuer’s pressure, falling just short of the record books. Steuer took home $50,000 for his win while Larsen earned $30,000 for his efforts.

Going into the event, Izzet decks were almost half of the format with Izzet Prowess leading the way at 30.5 percent of the Day 1 field while Izzet Spellementals and Izzet Lessons were the No. 3 and No. 4 decks. Mono-Green Landfall, the explosive aggro/combo deck was the second-most played deck and its Selesnya variant turned out to be the deck of the tournament.

In the end, Izzet Prowess failed to convert with a Top 8-finish while the finalists both played Selesnya Landfall and two others played Mono-Green Landfall.
