Cory Lack won the Regional Championship at SCG CON Washington, DC with Rakdos Cauldron on Sunday.

After creating the Rakdos Cauldron deck and putting it on the map through Magic Online finishes, Lack made his mark on the tabletop world by piloting his powerful creation to a victory over more than 1,800 other players. Lack went 13-2 through the Swiss and made the Top 8 as the No. 2 seed thanks to a perfect Day 2 performance.

Lack had to defeat Patrick Wu (Azorius Lotus Field) in the quarterfinals and Paul Yeem (Enigmatic Incarnation) in the semis to set up the finals against Connor Mackenzie (Rakdos Transmogrify). Both finalists had locked up World Championship invites to go along with their Pro Tour and Regional Championship qualifications, so they just had to battle it out for the $20,000 first-place prize and the title of Regional Champion.

Lack and Mackenzie split the first two games in blazing fashion, with each player piecing together their combo through each other’s disruption. Neither player got to assemble their door-slamming combination in the deciding game, but Lack got out to an aggressive start with Marvin, Murderous Mimic and Voldaren Thrillseeker. Mackenzie had to keep the threats off the board to keep himself from dying from a potential combo finish, but Hazoret, the Fervent allowed Lack to get Mackenzie to one life.

Mackenzie responded by solving The Case of the Stashed Skeleton and picking apart Lack’s board thanks to a Sheoldred’s Edict to clear Hazoret. Both players were in top-deck mode from there and had access to their own Fountainport to keep the action flowing. In the end, a Fish token represented the final points of damage, but not through combat, as Lack ripped Agatha’s Soul Cauldron to give the Fish Voldaren Thrillseeker’s ability to go upstairs to bypass Mackenzie’s blocker to seal the deal.

Lack was one of just 25 players to play Rakdos Cauldron and only seven of them made Day 2. Check out the Day 1 metagame breakdown below.

Day 2 consisted of 421 players that reached 18 match points on Day 1. See how the archetypes converted below.
