Jimmy Wong was joined by Lauren Bond and Jay Annelli from the world building team of WotC, to discuss the creation of the crime families from Magic’s upcoming set. They also previewed the leaders of three of the families.

Meet Jetmir, Nexus of Revels.

Jetmir, the head of the Cabaretti crime family, is a 5/4 legendary Cat Demon that costs 1RGW. This boss plays well with a gang of creatures, so Commander players will want to go wide with Jetmir on the battlefield.

Creatures you control get +1/+0 and have vigilance as long as you control three or more creatures.

Creatures you control also get +1/+0 and have trample as long as you control six or more creatures.

Creatures you control also get +1/+0 and have double strike as long as you control nine or more creatures.

Jetmir is going to pump up your team as long as you have at least two other creatures and scales up to maximum power at nine total creatures. Once you have nine, all your creatures get +3/+0, vigilance, trample, and double strike! If an opponent doesn’t have a way to clear the battlefield quickly, it’s going to be curtains for the rest of the table!

Next up is Raffine, Scheming Seer.

Raffine leads the Obscura and is a 1/4 legendary Sphinx Demon with flying and ward 1 for WUB. This Esper-colored creature also introduces the connive mechanic. Connive looks to be an ability that lets you loot for a number of attacking creatures (X in Raffine’s case) and put +1/+1 counters on the creature that does the conniving for each nonland card discarded.

Flying, ward 1

Whenever you attack, target attacking creature connives X, where X is the number of attacking creatures. (Draw X cards, then discard X cards. Put a +1/+1 counter on that creature for each nonland card discarded this way.)

Raffine looks to play well in a deck that wants to not only attack, but set up some graveyard shenanigans by having a reliable discard outlet. With flying and ward 1, it will be tough to interact with Raffine easily so be wary of this Sphinx’s riddle.

Lastly, take a look at Lord Xander, the Collector.

Lord Xander is the boss of the Maestros and is a 6/6 Vampire Demon Noble for 4UBR. While more expensive to cast than the previous two creatures, he makes quite the impact upon entering the battlefield.

When Lord Xander, the Collector enters the battlefield, target opponent discards half the cards in their hand, rounded down.

Whenever Lord Xander attacks, defending player mills half their library rounded down.

When Lord Xander dies, target opponent sacrifices half the nonland permanents they control, rounded down.

Lord Xander shows up and strips away half of an opponents’ hand. Then if he gets to stick around, he ravages a defending player’s deck upon attacking. If you can manage to kill him, you have to pay the price of losing half of your nonland permanents. Grixis players just found a new Commander super star.

What do you think of these new capos coming to Magic? What do you think the last two families’ leaders will do?
