From Standard to Legacy, it’s impossible to undersell the impact this Kor Artificer and her equipment searching abilities have had on Magic. Stoneforge Mystic debuted in Worldwake with its only other printing being a Grand Prix promo. Fourteen months later, New Phyrexia was released and introduced Stoneforge Mystic to Batterskull and Sword of War and Peace. Just like Stoneforge Mystic, the only other printing of Batterskull has been a Grand Prix promo.

Until now.

Not only are the pair getting reprinted in Double Masters, but they’re both receiving the box topper treatment with incredible art from Dan Dos Santos and rk post. Stoneforge Mystic was so powerful in Standard it was banned in June 2011 with Jace, the Mind Sculptor (back before cards got banned in Standard multiple times a year). In combination with Batterskull, Sword of Feast and Famine, and Sword of War and Peace, Stoneforge and Jace were played in oppressive numbers, dominating every Standard event to the point where attendance numbers at all levels of the game were dwindling.

Even before New Phyrexia gave Stoneforge the extra toys, the white two-drop won Pro Tour Paris in 2011 with Sylvok Lifestaff.

After the Standard banning and its inclusion on the Modern banned list when the format was created, Stoneforge Mystic found its home in Legacy. Pairing up with Umezawa’s Jitte and Sword of Fire and Ice for the first time, Stoneforge Mystic powered up blue midrange and control decks, as well as Death and Taxes and almost any other deck playing white. Even when Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time were crushing Legacy, Stoneforge Mystic and friends still found a way.

In August of 2019, Stoneforge Mystic was unbanned in Modern and back to teaming up with Batterskull and Sword of Feast and Famine. The format has shifted a bunch since its unbanning, but Stoneforge Mystic has found success early in its introduction to Modern and continues to be the backbone to control decks in the current format.
