A whopping twenty percent of the cards in my deck this week are named using this same, trite formula. Oh, sure, it’s easy to port the card’s name into German or Japanese – but it’s also hackneyed, light on flavor, and is probably done by some sort of automated Card-Name-O-Matic 3000(tm) in the back room to save Wizards’ some time. So what is the lamest card naming process ever?
I had been up late the night before importing all of the card information into Star City’s database, so you’d think I’d know all the cards… Right? Wrong. I actually like being spoiled. So showing up at the tournament, exhausted, run-down, and trying to sort through a new set? Not my greatest strategical moment.

The whole Masters thing is still leading me down the primrose path of strange memories of old cards I used to play with. Unfortunately, this nostalgia seems to keep getting in my eyes.
For many, Masters Edition is a chance to play with old cards that they can no longer afford. But for people like me, it’s a chance to go on about the tales of how I used to play that card back in my day, when I also wore an onion on my belt, as was the fashion at the time. So not only do I discuss the greatest Limited hits of Masters Edition, but I give you bizarre anecdotes of what it was like to play those cards back in the days before the Internet! Yes, you too can relive a past you never had!
The Ferrett is bored with Magic, so instead of going with correct strategy, he instead opts to run a horrifically creature-light deck to see what happens when you run removal over guys. The results? Well, there’s a secret here for ya.
There have been apocalypses predicted for every change to this game that I’ve ever seen…. And none more so than Magic Online. Magic Online would be the death of Magic, it would fail miserably, it would get hacked. We all knew it, and people wrote tons of articles at the time telling us what would happen. So I went back to the halcyon days of 2002 to see what people were saying at the time, and I compared what they were worried about to what actually happened, just to see how accurate the Magic community is as a whole at seeing things coming. Which led, in turn, to kind of a snapshot of Magic Online as it stands today.
Eighteen games, all of which ended in horrific face-beatings. And here’s where the sadomasochism kicks in: Honestly, I wanted to know how bad it could get. How long could I endure playing with this same set of cards before the universe broke down and handed me a win? It was Tenth Edition — would I go zero-for-ten on Tenth? The writer in me went, “Wow, that’s a pretty good title,” even as the player in me cringed….
It helps to actually draw the bombs once you open them. Alas, I had no such luck this week. But hey, it’s the summer doldrums, that’s to be expected, right?
A very old topic reared its ugly head in the forums in response to my article last week on 10th Edition. I’ve been editing the dang site for almost seven years now, and at this point I wish someone would drag this topic out back and beat it to death with a stick. But no, it keeps getting brought up, and so I figure I might as well flog this deceased equine with a few more savory paragraphs.
The Ferrett opened up some pretty darned strong cards at his release fest, so “strategy” wasn’t as big a part in the games as “luck.” So after some brief discussions on cards in 10th, Ferrett asks a Core question: is it possible to have a really good Core set?
You know them by heart. Some of them have been plaguing you for almost a year. They pop up with an aggravating regularity to steal games from you that you should have won, or to turn happy-fun games into irritating crawls.
